SHAWN MACKENZIE OF THE BEDFORD BLUES RECEIVES KEN MANTIN AWARD
Jul. 9, 2020

Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce that Bedford Blues Minor Hockey Association hockey development professional Shawn MacKenzie is the winner of our 2020 Ken Mantin Award.

The Ken Mantin Award is named in honour of former Hockey Nova Scotia president Ken Mantin and is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to amateur hockey development in Nova Scotia.

Shawn’s hockey resume is a long and impressive one and his hockey story has truly come full circle. Before enjoying a successful junior hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League, Shawn grew up playing his minor hockey in Bedford. After spending three OHL seasons split between the Windsor Spitfires and the Oshawa Generals, he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies and went on to a five-year pro career that saw him hoist a Calder Cup.

Shawn retired from pro hockey in 1987 but he didn’t stay away from the game for long. He soon took up coaching and would go on to spend much of the next two decades behind the bench in the junior ranks in both the OHL and in the QMJHL with his hometown Halifax Mooseheads.

Shawn returned to his roots in 2006 when he became the hockey development professional for the Bedford Blues Minor Hockey Association. Over the past 14 years, he has brought a wealth of hockey knowledge to the association. With an emphasis on development, Shawn has become a fixture in every facet of the organization. For the hundreds of young Bedford players that he shares the ice with, Shawn is a mentor who understands what it takes to advance and grow through the hockey ranks.

Working alongside the Bedford Blues executive, Shawn has helped to pilot and lead development initiatives to grow the game in his community.

On behalf of everyone at Hockey Nova Scotia, we would like to congratulate Shawn MacKenzie on receiving our 2020 Ken Mantin Award.
