Welcome to the home of Hockey Nova Scotia!
Jun. 25, 2020

Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce that the Chebucto Minor Hockey Association’s Dean Smith is the winner of our 2020 Hockey Nova Scotia Award of Merit.

The Hockey Nova Scotia Award of Merit is presented annually to an individual who has served hockey faithfully and made a significant contribution to the game.

Dean Smith is an amazing ambassador of both our province and our game.

As a busy father and lawyer, Smith somehow manages to find ways to dedicate countless hours each week as a minor hockey coach, program organizer, and volunteer.

A long-time secretary of the Nova Scotia-based
Black Ice Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame Society, Smith has also been a leading force behind the success of the Hockey Nova Scotia Black Youth Ice Hockey Initiative. For more than a decade, he has given up his time as both an on-ice instructor and a program organizer to help introduce the sport to our province’s African Nova Scotian community.

A passionate supporter of our game, Smith is also a volunteer coach with the Chebucto Atlantics Minor Hockey Association. This season, he served as both head coach of the MHA’s U15 C Warriors and as an assistant coach with one of his association’s U11 B teams.

Despite his already busy schedule, Smith didn’t hesitate when he was approached by our branch in Dec. 2019 to sit on the Hockey Nova Scotia Diversity and Inclusion Task Force where his love of the game, attention to detail, and strong leadership are greatly respected and valued.

Dean Smith is one of the best volunteers an organization could hope for and our hockey community is fortunate to have him.

On behalf of everyone at Hockey Nova Scotia, we would like to congratulate
Dean Smith on receiving our 2020 Hockey Nova Scotia Award of Merit.
