HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA'S FEMALE COUNCIL AWARDS NEW FEMALE UNDER-18 AAA FRANCHISE IN CAPE BRETON
May. 13, 2020

DARTMOUTH – Hockey Nova Scotia announced today that a new Female Under-18 AAA franchise has been awarded in the Cape Breton region.

After a thorough selection process, an entry from business owner and hockey coach Sonya Lynk was selected as the winning bid for the Cape Breton region. Hockey Nova Scotia’s Female Council began soliciting bids in March for the vacated franchise in the league formerly known as the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League (NSFMHL). With Hockey Canada’s age division name changes taking effect next season, the NSFMHL will soon be re-branded.

The new franchise will be known as the
Cape Breton Lynx and the team will begin operations when the next Female Under-18 AAA hockey season begins. The team will play out of the Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre in Membertou.

A former NCAA player at Elmira College,
Lynk began coaching at the University of New Brunswick in 2006. In 2017, she joined the bench staff of the MacIntyre Chevy Panthers, the former NSFMHL franchise in the Cape Breton region, as an assistant coach. She will continue as an assistant coach with the Lynx.

“Sonya has a very impressive hockey resume, both as a player and as a coach," Hockey Nova Scotia Female Council chair Stephen Murray said.

“She is familiar with our players and with our league, and she is committed to both. We look forward to working with her to help her team grow and develop, both on and off the ice."

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate
Sonya Lynk on her winning bid and wish the Cape Breton Lynx the best of luck next season.
