Hockey Nova Scotia’s Minor Council is proud to announce the winners of January’s Bernie Lawlor Memorial Coach of the Month Award.
Cape Breton West Minor Hockey Association coach Liam Macdonald and New Waterford Minor Hockey Association coach Jonathan Gillis are the latest recipients of the coaching honour.
The award is named in memory of Bernie Lawlor, a long-time Hockey Nova Scotia Minor Council regional director for the Halifax zone. It is handed out each month to exceptional teachers of the game who have helped to make our sport better.

Liam MacDonald took on the head coach position of Cape Breton West’s Westside Atom C program this season.
With the help of assistant coaches Amanda MacIsaac and Sarah van den Hogen, the Judique native has created a positive environment for his players and one that they want to be a part of. His Atom team is excited for practices and he is committed to improving their on-ice development.
Jonathan Gillis is the coach of New Waterford association’s Atom A team.
Since taking on this role, the young coach has become very respected within his association. He has dedicated his time to helping his team get better both on and off the ice. A prepared volunteer, Gillis’ love of teaching and of the game is evident to anyone who sees him behind the bench or on the ice with his team.
Hockey Nova Scotia and the Hockey Nova Scotia Minor Council would like to congratulate Liam and Jonathan on their awards and thank them for their contributions to the game.
