FORTIER AND TZAGARAKIS RECEIVE FIRST-EVER BERNIE LAWLOR MEMORIAL COACH OF MONTH AWARDS
Nov. 8, 2018

DARTMOUTH — Hockey Nova Scotia’s Minor Council is proud to announce the first-ever winners of the Bernie Lawlor Memorial Coach of the Month Award.

Dartmouth Whalers Bantam AA coach Dave Tzagarakis
and Halifax Hawks Minor Hockey Association Atom C coach Jean-Louis Fortier are the first recipients of the new award that was introduced last month.

The award is named in memory of Bernie Lawlor, a long-time Hockey Nova Scotia Minor Council regional director for the Halifax zone. It is handed out each month to exceptional teachers of the game who have helped to make our sport better.

In his nomination, Tzagarakis is described as a committed coach who focuses on development.

"His approach is consistently positive, encouraging, constructive and respectful at practices, games, off-ice training sessions and in the change room. He inspires our boys to do their very best and has gone above and beyond in developing their hockey skills. For example, he routinely sends out practice plans to fully prepare the boys for practices. He remains very receptive to parents but provides the boys the opportunity to be their own advocates. Team morale and giving back to the community are both high priorities to Dave, as evidenced by his desire to hold social events with the team and encourage volunteerism amongst the players. The skills they are learning from Dave go far beyond hockey and extend to life skills and tips for success in life."

In his nomination, Fortier is described as
"a soft-spoken, respectful coach who tries to engage all the players on the team when discussing practice drills or game strategy in the dressing room. He has good hockey skills and is able to communicate well with the players on the ice."

Fortier’s nominator goes on to say,
"I have heard from parents from his team last year that Jean-Louis was very keen on development and fair play. He represents minor hockey’s goals and standards exceedingly well and is a good ambassador for the sport. He is exactly the kind of guy my friend Bernie Lawlor would want to have coaching the kids."

Hockey Nova Scotia and the Hockey Nova Scotia Minor Council would like to congratulate Jean-Louis and Dave on receiving the first-ever Bernie Lawlor Memorial Coach of the Month Awards.

Thank you for your contributions to the game.
