BATHERSON AND TURNBULL RECEIVE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR HONOURS AT SUPPORT4SPORT AWARDS

HALIFAX – A pair of Nova Scotians that represented Canada on the international stage walked away as big winners from the Supprt4Sport Awards this weekend.
 
The best in sport were recognized on Saturday, May 26 at Sport Nova Scotia's 2018 Support4Sport Awards. Representatives from the sport of hockey were finalists in five of the major categories.


Stellarton's Blayre Turnbull, who represented Canada in PyeongChang on the silver medal-winning national women's Olympic team, captured the Female Team Athlete of the Year Award while New Minas native Drake Batherson, who scored seven goals and won gold at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, took home the Male Team Athlete of the Year Award.


The 2016-17 Cape Breton West Islanders that captured Atlantic Canada’s first-ever TELUS Cup in 2017 were finalists in the Team of the Year category while Turnbull’s Olympic women’s team coach Troy Ryan was a runner-up for the Coach of the Year Award. 

The Hockey Nova Scotia-ISANS New Canadians Hockey Program that introduced hockey to 30 young newcomers to Canada, was a finalist in the 2018 Sport Makes a Difference Award category.
