WESTERN RIPTIDE PAIR SELECTED TO REPRESENT PROVINCE AT 2018 IIHF GLOBAL GIRLS' GAME
Mar. 1, 2018
DARTMOUTH — A pair of teammates are Mississauga-bound later this month to represent the province at an international hockey event featuring girls from across the country.
Erin Broome and Stella Bowles are preparing to hit the ice next week at the 2018 IIHF Global Girls’ Game in Mississauga. The pair were selected by Hockey Nova Scotia’s Female Council to participate in the game which is being hosted by the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) as part of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s global event. This year, more than 30 member federations will take part in the game that will begin on the other side of the globe and continue in rinks around the world until it finally wraps up in Canada.
The OWHA invited two players from each Hockey Canada branch to take part. Hockey Nova Scotia’s Female Council invited Female Bantam A players from across the province to apply and Broome and Bowles were selected. Bowles, a 14-year old left winger from LaHave, and Broome, a 13-year old defenceman from Chester Basin, are teammates with the Western Riptide’s Bantam A team.
The pair fell in love with the female game and are looking forward to representing the province at the event.
"Hockey has not always been my passion,” Broome wrote in her application essay. “That's changed ever since I joined female hockey four years ago.”
It is a similar story for Bowles who says she begged her parents to let her play after she discovered an all-girls team in her community. She’s now finishing up her third season.
"I only started hockey when I was 11-years old,” Bowles wrote. “But [I] have completely [fallen] in love with the game."
The 2018 IIHF Global Girls' Game gets underway at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 in Mississauga. The event is a celebration of female hockey and the teams, which will be made up of girls from across Canada, will have a jam-packed weekend including a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate Stella Bowles and Erin Broome on being selected to represent the province in Ontario this month. Best of luck, girls!
