Novice hockey will have a new look in Nova Scotia this year.

Beginning during the 2017-18 minor hockey season, Novice hockey will use a modified ice surface that will encourage and promote development. This change will improve and assist with the development of young players by getting them more involved with the game through increased puck touches, shots, completed passes, and transitions.

Below is the new minor hockey schedule that teams at the Novice level will follow:

From the beginning of the minor hockey season to December 1, 2017, Novice teams will not participate in any games. They will focus solely on development through their team practices.

Between December 1, 2017 and January 15, 2018, Novice teams will only be allowed to play cross-ice and half-ice games. The cross-ice and half-ice formats are proven to get young players more involved in the game.

After January 15, 2018, teams will be allowed to play a maximum of 15 full-ice games. Teams will also still be allowed to play games on a modified ice surface (like cross-ice or half-ice hockey).

Hockey Nova Scotia is providing a Novice Hockey Guide for the upcoming season for parents and Minor Hockey Associations to assist with this transition. To view the guide, please click here.

The guide lays out the rationale for these changes. The benefits to the development of young hockey players is evident in the numbers above.

These changes take effect at the beginning of the 2017-18 minor hockey season.
