THREE NOVA SCOTIANS SELECTED AT 2017 NHL ENTRY DRAFT IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO — Three Nova Scotians heard their names called in the Windy City over the weekend.
The 2017 NHL Entry Draft got underway on Friday night at the United Center in Chicago and Herring Cove's Shane Bowers did not have to wait long for a team to give him the nod. The Ottawa Senators used the 28th pick of the first round to draft the Waterloo Blackhawk forward. Bowers scored 22 goals and added 29 assists in 60 games this season in the USHL.
Bowers is the first Nova Scotian to be selected in the opening round of the NHL Entry Draft since Nathan MacKinnon was picked first overall by the Colorado Avalance in 2013. He spent time with the LandWorks Gulls of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League (NSMBHL), as well as the Halifax McDonald's of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League (NSMMHL), before continuing his career in the USHL.

Bowers was not the only Nova Scotian to be handed a Senators sweater over the weekend. Drake Batherson, an Indiana-born, New Minas-raised forward with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, was chosen by 121st overall by Ottawa in the fourth round on Saturday. Batherson scored 22 goals and chipped in 36 assists in 61 games with Eagles this season.
The pair are familiar with one another. During the 2014-15 season, Bowers (23 goals, 29 assists) and Batherson (20 goals, 26 assists) finished 1-2 in the NSMMHL scoring race.
Morgan Barron, a former member of the Dartmouth Major Midgets of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League who finished fifth in league scoring during the 2014-15 season, was chosen 174th overall in the sixth round by the New York Rangers.

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate Shane, Drake and Morgan on their selections at this year's NHL Entry Draft and wish them the best of luck as they begin the next chapter in their hockey careers.
