Nova Scotia's top female league will welcome four New Brunswick-based teams this season

DARTMOUTH — Nova Scotia's top female Midget hockey league is expanding to New Brunswick.

Beginning during the 2017-18 season, the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League (NSFMHL) will welcome four teams from New Brunswick to compete for a league championship. The New Brunswick-based teams include the Moncton RocketsNorthern PanthersFundy Hurricanes and a EDZA West Midget AAA franchise.

"This is a very exciting day for the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League and for female hockey in the Maritimes," said Stephen Murray, chair of Hockey Nova Scotia's Female Council. "By working with our colleagues in New Brunswick, we are going to be able to merge our resources to help develop and promote the female game at the highest level in our respective provinces."

While the four New Brunswick teams will play for the NSFMHL championship, they will also return to their home province to compete for a provincial title and an opportunity to represent Hockey New Brunswick at the annual Atlantic Midget Female Hockey Championship.

"We are looking forward to partnering with our friends in Nova Scotia to help grow female hockey in our region," said Anita Scott, Female Commissioner of Hockey New Brunswick. "Our players will now have an opportunity to develop and hone their skills at home in New Brunswick against even more of the Maritimes' best female players."

The Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League was formed in 2008 to provide Nova Scotia’s best female hockey players with an opportunity to compete at an elite level without having to move away from home. The Nova Scotia-based franchises include the Lantz-based Pro Cresting Penguins, the New Glasgow-based Northern Subway Selects, the Membertou-based MacIntyre Chevy Panthers, and Bedford-based Metro Boston Pizza.

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to welcome the four new teams to the NSFMHL and wish all franchises the best of luck as they prepare to compete for a league championship next season.
