GLACE BAY AND GREENWICH CAPTURE FIRST-EVER NSMXWHL TITLES

DARTMOUTH — A pair of Nova Scotia hockey teams have claimed the title as the first-ever champions of the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League.

Earlier this month, the Glace Bay Miners defeated Halifax 3-2 to win the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League Divison I crown. The provincial championship was held as part of the 40th Annual SEDMHA Tournament.

The Miners led 3-0 after two periods of play thanks to goals from Chad O'Neill, Dylan Pimentel and Nathan Livingston. Halifax rallied in the third, scoring twice but netminder Kane Drake weathered the attack to earn the win in goal.

In Division II play, the Greenwich Bombers defeated Kingston 4-0 in the championship game to win the provincial title. Greenwich was undefeated throughout the provincial finals, posting victories over Yarmouth County (10-0), East Hants (5-4 OT), Shelburne (8-1) and Western Valley-Kingston (3-0).

“We would like to congratulate all of the teams that competed in the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League this year on their seasons,” said Garth Isenor, president of Hockey Nova Scotia. “We would also like to acknowledge the organizers of SEDMHA who stepped up to offer a venue for these great teams to compete for a provincial title.”

This was the first-ever season for the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League. In total, 33 teams hit the ice in four regional leagues that formed the NSMXWHL.

The new league, created by Hockey Nova Scotia in January, offered a playing alternative to high school hockey players who had been sidelined by the school labour dispute.
