NEW MIDGET HOCKEY LEAGUE LAUNCHING FOR 2017-18 SEASON IN NOVA SCOTIA

Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League aims to offer new development opportunities for 15 and 16-year-old players

DARTMOUTH – Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce the formation of a new league for Midget hockey players.

The Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League will begin play in September 2017. Seven league franchises have been awarded for the 2017-18 season. These franchises include four teams from the Halifax Regional Municipality, one from Cape Breton, one from the Annapolis Valley and one from Pictou County.

Bids for franchises were accepted from minor hockey associations and private operators in late 2016 and early 2017.

“The primary focus of the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League will be to offer an opportunity for our 15 and 16-year-old players to remain within the Hockey Canada development model and framework,” said Hockey Nova Scotia president Garth Isenor. “We look forward to working with our committed franchise owners to help make this league the first choice for 15-year old players who are looking to continue their elite development in Nova Scotia.”

Teams will be made-up of players who meet the following criteria:

  • Players who are 16 years of age during the playing season but who are born after September 1
  • Players who are 16 years of age during the entire playing season (a limit of four per team)

As part of the new league’s focus on development, Hockey Nova Scotia will be coordinating fitness testing and off-ice education sessions for all Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League teams throughout the season.

“This league is, first and foremost, about the development of 15-year old players in this province,” Isenor said. “We all know that players develop and mature at different stages and this new league will provide a supportive environment that will encourage all of these players to meet their full potential.”

Some teams will be hosting spring identification camps in the coming weeks. We will provide this information on behalf of our new Minor Midget teams in the coming days.
