BEDFORD – Some of the top sledge hockey players in the Maritimes will be competing in Bedford this weekend.

The East Coast Sledge Hockey Challenge gets underway on Saturday, March 18 at the BMO Centre in Bedford when the host Halifax Sledge Grinders take on the Halifax Sledge Mariners. The tournament concludes on Sunday, March 19 with the gold medal game scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Aside from the two Halifax-based teams, the tournament will also include the Cape Breton Sledgehammers and the P.E.I. Ice Breakers. The tournament comes a week after the national women’s sledge hockey team held a camp at the BMO Centre which featured a pair of exhibition games against the Nova Scotia provincial sledge hockey team.

“It has been an exciting month for sledge hockey players in this province,” said Hockey Nova Scotia president Garth Isenor. “We are certainly looking forward to more great sledge hockey action this weekend and encourage hockey fans to stop by this great event.”

This is the first year for the East Coast Sledge Hockey Challenge. Four teams will participate in the event making it the largest sledge hockey tournament to be played in the Halifax area.
