PUCK DROPS ON NOVA SCOTIA MIDGET X WINTER HOCKEY LEAGUE SEASON THIS WEEK

The new league offers displaced high school hockey players a place to play

DARTMOUTH –
The puck drops this week on the new Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League season.

The Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League, which is made up of four regional leagues boasting 33 teams across the province, officially gets underway this week. In total, 33 teams will hit the ice this winter in the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter League.

The new league was launched by Hockey Nova Scotia last month to offer a playing alternative to high school hockey players who had been sidelined by the school labour dispute. Hundreds of athletes from across the province were left without an opportunity to play our game as a result of the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) no longer sanctioning high school hockey during the Nova Scotia Teachers Union’s work-to-rule job action.

As Hockey Nova Scotia’s mandate is to offer hockey to everyone in the province who wishes to participate, the Hockey Nova Scotia board sanctioned the formation and registration of teams within our minor hockey system that would accommodate and host those displaced high school hockey players.

“At Hockey Nova Scotia, we believe that every player who wants to play our game should be given that opportunity,” said Darren Cossar, Hockey Nova Scotia’s Executive Director. “We are very pleased to be able to help get more than 600 players, who, in many cases, have spent their entire lives playing our sport, back on the ice.”

The Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League is made up of the following four regional leagues:

Cape Breton Midget X Winter Hockey League: Cape Breton, Sydney, Northside, Cape Breton County, Glace Bay

North Midget X Winter Hockey League: Cumberland, Antigonish, Pictou (Red), Pictou (White), Truro, East Hants

HRM Midget X Winter Hockey League: Sackville (Orange), Sackville (White), TASA Ducks, Cole Harbour (Surge), Cole Harbour (White), Dartmouth (Gold), Dartmouth (Navy), Bedford (Armada), Bedford (Thunder), Chebucto (Atlantics), Halifax Hawks (Black), Halifax Hawks (Red)

South Midget X Winter Hockey League: South Shore, West Hants, Acadia, Acadia Greenwich Bombers, Western Valley, Western Valley, Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Acadia (Wildcats), Shelburne, Clare/Digby

The teams will play an abbreviated schedule of 10-12 regular season games against teams from their respective regional leagues. The teams will also have an opportunity to compete for a provincial championship as part of the 2017 SEDMHA Minor Hockey Tournament.

“We would like to thank all of the volunteers from our minor hockey associations who have helped to get this league off the ground and these players back on the ice,” Cossar said. “We would also like to express our gratitude to the organizers of SEDMHA who have generously offered to host the new league’s provincial championship tournament.”

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to wish all of the Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League’s teams the best of luck this year.
