DARTMOUTH, N.S. – The Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League’s Novas are Atlantic champions.

The Novas defeated the host Dartmouth Whalers 2-1 in the Gold Medal Game of the 2015 Irving Oil Challenge Cup at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Sunday.

Logan Timmons and Ferghus MacDonald scored for The Novas while Luke Henman had the lone tally for the Whalers. Colten Ellis earned the victory in goal for The Novas and also received Player of the Game honours.

The Whalers sported an undefeated record of 4-0 heading into Sunday’s final while The Novas were 3-1. The Whalers defeated The Novas 6-0 on the first night of the tournament to give The Novas’ their only loss of the Irving Oil Challenge Cup.

This game was a rematch of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League’s provincial final. The Novas beat the Whalers 2-1 in overtime to capture the provincial title and earn a ticket to the Irving Oil Challenge Cup.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, the Moncton Hawks captured bronze thanks to a 7-0 shutout win over Prince Edward Island’s Prince County Warriors. Jamal Nelson registered the shutout between the pipes for Moncton.

At the Bell Aliant Peewee AAA Atlantic Championship in Wolfville, the EDZA West All-Stars defeated the TASA Ducks 2-1 in Sunday’s Gold Medal Game to capture the Atlantic title at the Andrew H. McCain Arena in Wolfville. Sam Campbell and Peter Reynolds scored for EDZA West while Logan Carruthers answered for TASA.

In the Bronze Medal Game, the host Acadia Axemen shut out the St. John’s Hitmen (Hockey Newfoundland) 2-0 to finish the tournament in third place. Cameron Gould earned the shutout between the pipes for Acadia.

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate The Novas on becoming Atlantic Canadian champions. Hockey Nova Scotia would also like to congratulate the TASA Ducks, Dartmouth Whalers and Acadia Axemen on great seasons.
