REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR BRAND NEW MALE UNDER-13 HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
Mar. 6, 2015
Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce the launch of a brand new division in our prestigious High Performance Program.
The Male Under-13 High Performance Program is the latest addition to Hockey Nova Scotia’s provincial development program. For the first time, first-year Peewee AAA players will be invited to participate in the program and prepare themselves for an opportunity to vie for a spot on future provincial, regional and national teams within Hockey Canada’s High Performance Program.
Development will be the primary objective of the Under-13 division and this group of players (2003) will form the core of what will eventually become the Canada Winter Games boys team that will compete at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer in February of 2019. After our recent fifth-place finish (our best finish since 1979) at the Canada Winter Games, we recognized that having the top players in the 2003 birth year together earlier would:
- expose them to a High Performance environment
- benefit their personal skill development
- hopefully help our program take the next step on the national stage at the Games in 2019.
In 2007, Hockey Nova Scotia created the Male Under-14 Program. The goal of this program was simple: to provide an opportunity to bring the best players in that age division together for a summer development camp. No team was selected at this camp. Following that initiative, other provinces followed suit. Today, that team and others take part in the Atlantic Challenge Cup.
The Under-13 Program is the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada and Hockey Nova Scotia believes that offering this opportunity to Peewee-aged players will assist participants by exposing them to a high performance hockey environment earlier and by helping them gain a stronger understanding and appreciation for what it will take to succeed at higher levels in the game.
While our High Performance Program is focused on preparing and identifying the very best players in our province for future national program opportunities, it also maintains a strong commitment to player development. The program will concentrate on exposing players to high level training programs including a focus on skill development, off-ice training and conditioning, as well as class sessions on many topics relevant to aspiring hockey players. The Under-13 Program will also provide Hockey Nova Scotia the platform to bring together the players who will eventually be selected to go on in the High Performance Program to higher divisions.
