Forwards Alexa Normore of Bedford and Breanna Lanceleve of Lower Sackville have been selected to the Canadian women hockey teams that will compete at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain.

The women’s hockey tournament of the 27th biennial Games get underway today with the gold-medal finals set for Feb. 12. The Canadian women have won all three tournaments since the sport made its Universiade debut in 2009.

Canada opens the women’s tournament Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. AST) against Kazakhstan.

Normore, a fifth year kintetics major at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish and a forward with the X-Women hockey team, will serve as an alternate captain on the team. Lanceleve is a second year player with the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the captain of her university club.

The Canadian women enter the Granada tournament with a 21-0 all-time record in Universiade competition, including a 3-1 gold medal win over China in 2009, a 4-1 defeat of Finland in the 2011 title match and a 5-0 championship victory over Russia in 2013.
