NS PLAYERS IMPRESS AT 2014 QMJHL DRAFT
Jun. 3, 2014

It was a memorable weekend for more than two dozen young hockey players from Nova Scotia and one junior hockey fans in the province will not forget anytime soon.

Twenty-eight Nova Scotians were selected during the 2014 QMJHL Draft which was held on Saturday, May 31st in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

“This was a tremendous draft for our players and we could not be prouder,” says Hockey Nova Scotia President Randy Pulsifer.

Luke Green was the first of five Bluenosers selected during the first round of the draft. The 5’11, 168 pound Newbridge Academy (NSMMHL) defenceman went first overall to the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Green’s teammate Evan Fitzpatrick was the second player from Nova Scotia to be drafted. The 6’2, 194 pound goaltender went fourth overall to the Sherbrooke Phoenix. While he was born in Newfoundland, Fitzpatrick has called Lower Sackville home for the past two years.

Mitchell Balmas was the next Nova Scotian to go in the draft. The 5’11, 168 pound Cape Breton Tradesmen forward was selected seventh overall by the Charlottetown Islanders (NSMMHL).

Despite being listed at number seventy on the QMJHL’s Central Scouting list, Matt Sartoris was selected 12th overall by the Gatineau Olympiques. The 6’5, 183 pound defenceman spent this past season with the Weeks Major Midgets (NSMMHL).

Rounding out the first round was Michael O’Leary.  The 6’1, 160 pound forward played US prep school hockey with Salisbury last year.

The five players selected in the first round of the QMJHL Draft set a new benchmark for the province. The previous best first round was in 2005 in Chicoutimi when four Nova Scotians were selected including first overall selection Alex Grant of Antigonish. Rounding out that list were: 5) Stephen Lund, 6) Scott Brannon and 17) Ben MacAskill.

First overall selection Luke Green's twin brother was also drafted on Saturday. Matthew Green was chosen 21st overall and will join his brother in Saint John with the Sea Dogs.

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate all of our players who were drafted on Saturday and we would also like to wish the best of luck to those who weren’t. Keep working toward your dream.
