When the 2013-14 NHL Playoffs get underway later this week, Nova Scotia will be well-represented as names like Crosby and MacKinnon compete for Lord Stanley’s Cup. But there are two more names you can add to the list of playoff-bound Nova Scotians.

Gord Dwyer and Matt MacPherson have been selected by the NHL to officiate during the first round of the NHL Playoffs which gets underway on Wednesday evening. Dwyer has been a referee in the league for eight years while MacPherson is only in his second full season as a linesman.

“To be chosen to work an NHL playoff series is a tremendous honour and accomplishment,” says Todd Robinson, Referee-in-Chief of Hockey Nova Scotia. “On behalf of all officials across the province, I want to congratulate these men on their impressive achievements.”

Dwyer, 36, is a Lower Sackville native and a former minor hockey official in Nova Scotia. He officiated at the Jr. A, university, QMJHL and AHL levels before beginning his NHL officiating career in 2005.

Matt MacPherson, a 29-year old linesman from Antigonish, was one of the first graduates of Hockey Nova Scotia’s High Performance Program for officials when it was established a decade ago. Since that time, MacPherson has officiated at the Jr. A, university, QMJHL, ECHL and AHL levels. He worked the lines in his first NHL game during the fall of 2011.

Over the years, MacPherson and Dwyer have helped young officials in this province by lending their time as instructors in Hockey Nova Scotia’s High Performance Program for officials. MacPherson will be back at the High Performance Program summer camp when it gets underway in July in Antigonish.

“Gord and Matt are terrific role models for young men and women in Nova Scotia who hope to work as officials in our great game,” says Robinson.  “We couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate Dwyer and MacPherson on their playoff assignments and wish them luck as they begin their post-season journeys.
