More than 350 female hockey players from across Nova Scotia will take to the ice in Cole Harbour this weekend to celebrate the female game.

The 7th Annual Female Festival gets underway at Cole Harbour Place this evening and continues until Sunday, April 13th. The Female Festival is a year-end event for female hockey players, whether they are registered in the game or not. Players of all skill levels from the Initiation Program (IP) level to Bantam will be participating in games and skill development sessions throughout the weekend.

“This Female Festival is an opportunity for us to introduce young girls to the game of hockey and instill in them a passion for the sport that we hope will last a lifetime,” says Stephen Murray, chair of Hockey Nova Scotia’s Female Council.

Dozens of volunteers will be assisting with the festival over the weekend including players with the top two teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League this past season: the champion Pro Cresting Penguins (East Hants) and league runner-up Metro Boston Pizza.

Amanda Boulegon, an assistant coach with both the Saint Mary’s University women’s hockey team and Nova Scotia’s female 2015 Canada Winter Game’s team, will also serve as an on-ice instructor.

“This is an exciting event and a whole lot of fun for the girls,” says Murray. “We can’t wait to start.”

The first on-ice session begins tonight at 6:00 pm.
