CHANGES COMING TO NSFMHL NEXT SEASON
Feb. 5, 2014
Changes that will help grow female hockey in Nova Scotia are coming to the province’s top female midget league.
Effective at the beginning of the 2014-15 Nova Scotia Midget Female Hockey League season, Hockey Nova Scotia will rezone the boundaries of each of the league’s four franchise regions. This will alter the current catchment areas from which the league’s franchises draw their players.
“These modifications to the current league structure are being made in an effort to further grow and develop our best female midget hockey players,” says Hockey Nova Scotia President Randy Pulsifer. “We want to make the league experience of these players the best that it can be.”
The new, rezoned regions will now include the following areas:
Region 1: Area inclusive of all Minor Hockey Associations within the Cape Breton and Strait Regions.
Region 2: Area inclusive of all Highland and Fundy Region Minor Hockey Associations.
Region 3: Area inclusive of Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, Eastern Shore, East Hants, Bedford and Sackville Minor Hockey Associations.
Region 4: Area inclusive of Halifax, Chebucto and TASA Minor Hockey Associations and all Minor Hockey Associations in the Nova and Western Zones.
Because of these changes, existing franchise operators must submit bids to renew their current franchises. However, Hockey Nova Scotia is also encouraging prospective franchise operators to submit franchise bids to Hockey Nova Scotia. The four best bids will be awarded teams.
“What we are trying to do is offer a competitive on-ice product that will encourage all of our best young female players to stay here and play the game they love in Nova Scotia,” says Stephen Murray, Chair of Hockey Nova Scotia’s Female Council. “We believe this competitive environment will help foster both skill development and sportsmanship.”
