As the legendary Bob Johnson’s famous catchphrase goes, “It’s a great day for hockey!”

Sunday, January 26th certainly was.

Last weekend, Hockey Nova Scotia joined Canadian Tire and the Halifax Regional Municipality in hosting Canadian Tire Jumpstart: Hockey Day in Halifax. It was a celebration of our country’s national winter sport and our favourite pastime.

Throughout the afternoon, hockey players took to the Emera Oval ice on the Halifax Common to play the sport they love. There were on-site demonstrations featuring our Initiation Program, the Black Youth Ice Hockey Program, Female Hockey and Sledge Hockey.

There was also a goalie clinic put on by FinnGoalie trainer Jack Hartigan. The Halifax ACCEL Hawks of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam League were also at the Oval to help out with the day.

The final hour of the event was dedicated to a Jersey Skate. Members of the public were invited to wear their favourite hockey sweaters and take to the ice.

“Hockey Day in Halifax was a wonderful celebration of our sport,” said Hockey Nova Scotia President Randy Pulsifer. “It was fantastic to see so many people come out to be a part of the day.”

Hockey Nova Scotia would like to thank Canadian Tire Jumpstart, the Halifax Regional Municipality, mayor Mike Savage, Jack Hartigan, the Halifax ACCEL Hawks and all of the volunteers who helped make Hockey Day in Halifax such a huge success! Hockey Nova Scotia would also like to thank the Community Herald, Global Halifax and CTV Atlantic for their coverage of the event.

Thank you to everyone!
