Dartmouth, NS – Minor hockey players will be flocking to rinks across the province this weekend. But when they get on the ice, they will not be playing organized games – they will be honing their skills in other ways.

This weekend is the 11th Annual Hockey Nova Scotia Development Weekend. It is a weekend that allows minor hockey associations across the province to focus solely on providing development opportunities for all of their members. Associations will not be scheduling games during this time but will instead be conducting a variety of activities aimed at improving players, coaches, officials and other volunteers.

“The Hockey Nova Scotia Development Weekend is all about putting the focus on helping our members develop and improve upon their hockey skills,” says Randy Pulsifer, Hockey Nova Scotia President. “Teaching and learning these skills helps build excitement as those taking part see progress and want to continue to improve.”

On Saturday and Sunday, each minor hockey association will host their own clinics and workshops aimed at player development. Some of the clinics planned include goaltending, shooting, puck handling and power skating sessions. But these activities will not be confined to the ice. Yoga demos, nutrition classes, concussion awareness programs and coaching clinics are just a few of the off-ice sessions minor hockey associations have planned for their members.

“We believe that if a player is enjoying their hockey experience then they will want to continue to be a part of the game they love,” says Pulsifer. “This weekend is all about building those skills and fostering that love and understanding of the game.”
