For the fifth year in a row, Hockey Nova Scotia is gearing up for the start of the Black Youth Ice Hockey Initiative season.

The Black Youth Ice Hockey Initiative is a Hockey Nova Scotia program in partnership with the Black Ice Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame Society. The objective of the program is to provide boys and girls of African Canadian backgrounds the chance to experience ice hockey in a controlled, safe and fun on-ice environment.

This year, the program will consist of 18 on-ice weekly sessions that will be coordinated by fully certified Hockey Nova Scotia instructors along with community coaches. The program will run from 1:45-2:45 on Saturday afternoons at the BMO Centre in Bedford. The first session will take place on October 26th. As you can see from the video below, with a little bit of coaching and some quality ice time, these young players can pick up the game very quickly!

The program is open to players between 4-8 years old on a first come, first serve basis. The first 30 players who submit their completed applications to Hockey Nova Scotia will be accepted.

For an application, please click here. These applications can be emailed to Brad Taylor or mailed to the Hockey Nova Scotia office:

There is no cost for participants but each player must provide his or her own set of equipment. Participants can only take part in the program for one year. After this, players are encouraged to enroll in a local minor hockey program.

Hockey Nova Scotia isn't just looking for players for the program. We are also looking for coaches and volunteers. If you would like to be a part of the Black Youth Ice Hockey Initiative, please contact Brad Taylor or Darren Cossar.

More information about the program can be found in this brochure. Feel free to send it along to anyone you think might be interested in being a part of this great program!
