For almost two dozen young hockey players from across the province, Saturday represented the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the game.

Twenty-one Nova Scotians were selected by major junior league teams at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft in Chicoutimi over the weekend.

Nicholas Welsh of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League’s Halifax Titans was the first Bluenoser taken in the draft.  The Shawinigan Cataractes drafted the Halifax native in the second round with the 33rd overall pick. The defenseman, who was ranked 27th heading in to the draft, scored 5 goals and added 13 assists in 33 games for the Titans this season.

The Charlottetown Islanders were very interested in Nova Scotia hockey talent on Saturday, drafting seven players from the province. The Islanders made Antigonish’s Bradley Kennedy their top Nova Scotian pick, taking the high scoring forward 54th overall in the third round. Kennedy was the second leading scorer in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League this season, putting up 34 goals and adding 36 assists for the Cape Breton West Islanders in just 35 games.

Bedford’s Jordan Boyd was the third Nova Scotian selected in Saturday’s draft. Boyd, who spent the past season at Rothesay Netherwood prep school, was taken 66th overall by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.  Boyd had 17 goals and 22 assists in 41 games for Rothesay this season.
