Hockey Nova Scotia would like to congratulate the Halifax Mooseheads on capturing their first ever Memorial Cup.

The Mooseheads topped the WHL champion Portland Winterhawks 6-4 on Sunday night in Saskatoon in the Memorial Cup championship game.

Halifax was led by Cole Harbour native Nathan MacKinnon who notched a hat trick and added two assists against the Winterhawks and NHL Central Scouting’s top-ranked prospect Seth Jones.

MacKinnon finished as the top scorer in the tournament, racking up 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points in just four games. After the game, he was named tournament MVP.

MacKinnon was one of seven Nova Scotians on the Mooseheads roster at the tournament. Ryan Falkenham of Halifax and Cole Harbour’s Stephen MacAulay each added an assist in the final, while Brendan Duke (Cole Harbour) was solid on the point. The championship was three-time President Trophy winner MacAulay’s second Memorial Cup victory.

Fall River’s Chris Clarke provided confidence for the club as the team’s sturdy back-up goalie for starter Zach Fucale.

Lunenburg’s Brennan Bailey and Glace Bay’s Jordan Kennedy are also Memorial Cup winners.

Hockey Nova Scotia would to recognize these young men for their contributions to their team’s success this season. They have made the Nova Scotia hockey community very proud!
