Avril Lavigne visits HNS and Easter Seals NS Sledge Hockey Programs

Canadian singer Avril Lavigne took time from her busy tour schedule to visit over 30 Hockey Nova Scotia and Easter Seals Nova Scotia sledge hockey players on Thursday October 20, 2011 at Dalhousie Alumni Arena.

Lavigne, an Ambassador with Easter Seals Canada and in Halifax for a concert, made the visit to see the excitement and enthusiasm the young players exhibit on a weekly basis with their respective programs.  Lavigne took time to meet the players, listen to their stories and experience the pride they feel to be able to participate in Canada’s game. The young players were equally enthused to meet their idol.

Hockey Nova Scotia supports sledge programs in Sydney, Kentville and Halifax, offering organized sledge hockey sessions for youth through adults.  These programs offer basic sledge hockey skill development with games sprinkled in throughout the year. Both disabled and able bodied athletes compete on an equal level, all in sleds on the ice. For more information - click here.

The Easter Seals Nova Scotia’s Take PART (Physically Accessible Recreation Today) Sledge Hockey Activity provides an opportunity for physical literacy development in children with a physical disability.  Sledge participants learn to use their bodies to push themselves on their sleds using their upper body strength. The results of the program include improved knowledge of their body, body movements and their ability to perform the basic and more advanced movements of physical activity skills. No matter how you say it…
