Risk Management :: Background Checks
Criminal Record Checks(CRC)
&
Child Abuse Registry Checks (CAR) All coaches, bench staff, officials, executive, and volunteers, that have contact with a minor must have a Criminal Record check, with vulnerable sectors act, on file with Hockey Nova Scotia (this has been updated for the current season)
This process is defined in detail below and must be completed every three (3) years. This certification will show up on the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) and on the Hockey Canada Ehockey site where you enter your coaching card number to obtain your records.
Please contact your local MHA for CRC forms.
CHILD ABUSE REGISTRY CHANGES
The Department of Community Services has changed the way a child abuse registry check works. The CAR or Child Abuse Registry now works very similar to a Criminal Records Check. There is NO cost and checks are completed by the individual using form B2 and are handed in to the Minor Hockey Association with a photocopy of ID. The MHA completes the B1 form and submits it to Community Services. The returned results are then submitted by the MHA to the HNS office just like the CRC. The MHA can also choose to submit in groups the B2 forms/ID copies to HNS for processing.
Should you see your HCR account CAR status as reading "Failed," please do not worry. It simply means the check has not yet been returned to the HNS office. Your status will be updated to "Passed" as soon as the paperwork arrives back from Community Services. Note: Although it states if you are not working with children under 16 the check does not have to be completed, all MHA's must have all their bench/coaching staff etc complete this check.
Child Abuse B1/B2 forms must be submitted in their original form. Faxes, scans or copies WILL NOT be accepted!!
